what equipment is required to play softball?

At the house league level - all players require a batting helmet, face mask, glove and appropriate shoes to play softball.

Below are some of the different options and suggestions for each required items. Uniforms are provided by Milton Girls Softball.

Optional Equipment

BATTING GLOVES
Batting gloves are optional; players may choose to wear them if they wish.

CATCHERS EQUIPMENT
Milton Girls Softball supplies catchers equipment, but players may bring / purchase their own equipment.

MOUTH GUARDS
Mouth guards are optional; players may choose to wear one if they wish.

SLIDING SHORTS
Sliding shorts (sliders) help protect players when they are sliding into a base. They are recommended but not mandatory for U11 and up, and come in various styles. Sliding shorts are worn under game shorts / pants and will protect the butt and the upper thigh area.

SOFTBALL BATS
Coaches often have extra bats available, and many players are happy to share. However, if your daughter would like her own, we recommend choosing an ASA-approved softball/fastpitch bat—this certification will be clearly marked on the bat.

Ideally, the bat length should match the player’s leg length (similar to the inseam of a pant leg). In general, a lighter bat is easier to handle. Higher-quality bats typically have a greater “drop,” which is the difference between the bat’s length and its weight—look for a drop of 10 or more.

SOFTBALLS
Milton Girls Softball supplies all balls for practices and games. U13 and below use 11 inch softballs. U15 and up use 12 inch softballs. Please make sure that the size of your player's glove matches the size of the ball used in their age group.
